SEMATA INDONESIA is committed to implementing various community-based conservation programs to maintain the balance of nature and improve local well-being. Our focus is divided into four main programs :

Forest Conservation

Semata Indonesia protects tropical forest areas which are home to various wild animals/endemic species and sources of life for indigenous communities.
Our activities include :

  • Community-based forest patrols

  • Reforestation and replanting of native trees

  • Conservation education for the younger generation

  • Cooperation with the government in strengthening customary forest regulations

Protecting the Tropical Heart of the Archipelago
Coastal & Mangrove Conservation
Restoring the Coast, Protecting the Future

Semata Indonesia restores coastal areas through mangrove rehabilitation and economic empowerment of fishing communities. This program also supports climate adaptation and blue carbon conservation in coastal areas of Sumatra.
Our main focus :

  • Rehabilitation of damaged mangrove areas

  • Community training in sustainable mangrove cultivation

  • Monitoring of water quality and biodiversity

  • Conservation-based ecotourism collaboration

Conservation of Protected Terrestrial Wildlife
Protecting Endemic Animals from Extinction

Semata Indonesia works to protect wildlife such as orangutans, elephants, rhinos and other protected animals from the threat of hunting, illegal trade and habitat destruction.
This program includes :

  • Population survey and habitat mapping

  • Community-based law enforcement

  • Education and behavior change campaigns

  • Collaboration with animal rehabilitation centers

OECM & Conservation Area Management
Alternative Models for Community-Based Conservation

Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures (OECM) is an innovative approach to recognizing the role of communities in conservation outside formal protected areas.
What Semata Indonesia does :

  • Identification of OECM areas based on local and customary law

  • Facilitating the delineation of community conservation area boundaries

  • Strengthening community institutions

  • Participatory monitoring and GIS technology
